Many unwanted items are recyclable, but household/commercial
rubbish is still being taken to landfill. People are still choosing to put
everything in the bin for rubbish collection, instead of taking their time to
sort the recycling out. With households being provided with recycling
boxes/bins, it has helped many to keep things separated and recycle where
possible but residents are still disposing construction and demolition waste in
the bin.
With households planning home improvements to keep up with
time, it is important to maintain the amount of rubbish being sent to landfill.
To prevent residents sending large mixed loads of building waste to landfill,
many boroughs have introduced a charge to dispose of loads of construction and
demolition waste from home improvement projects.
As of August 2015, all mixed loads of construction,
demolition and excavation waste will be charged per 100kg (15.74 stones). DIY
and construction items such as paint, carpets and underlay, wood and appliances
like washing machines, fridges and freezers, will continue to be free of charge
but will have to be sorted for recycling and provide appropriate ID.
Boroughs hope by applying the charge it will encourage
residents to sort through their DIY waste and recycle what they can to reduce
the cost. People tend to take carloads of building waste to the reuse and
recycling centres, where most of which ends up in landfill.
